About Cutthroat

Cutthroat started out in 2004 as a simple website designed by Malface to showcase some of his miniatures. Malface and Pripyat had gotten back into the hobby a few years prior to the site’s inception, but with the two friends living in different cities (Ottawa and Kingston, respectively) they would resort to e-mailing each other photos of their works in progress. Malface built the site as a way to share his images not only with Prip, but with the rest of the web as well.

After a quick redesign in late ‘04, Mal moved the site onto Blogger and invited Pripyat to begin posting as well. At this point the site was still just a showcase for the two painters’ miniatures, but after Nomad joined in 2006 and issued the first “challenge”, things began to change.

Now in its fourth design, the Cutthroat Miniatures website is expanding into a proper painters’ resource, including tutorials, challenges, and more!

Meet the Crew

How long have you been painting miniatures?
Pripyat - I started painting in the late 1980s. The carpet in my old bedroom can vouch for that.

Nomad - I started on a fateful day somewhere back in my early teens. All I remember is seeing is a cool box with some red guys on it and I was hooked.

Malface - I started painting miniatures when I was ten, so that means I’ve been painting for over twenty years!

What was your first miniature?
Nom - I can’t actually remember, the first army “I” painted was an Space Ork army for 40K, can you say 5 colours…lol

Mal - As I recall the first miniatures I bought were part of a boxed set of Ninjas & Samurai put out by Grenadier (or was it Ral Partha?). Likewise to Nomad, I recall a similarly bland paint job!

Prip - Not sure exactly but it was probably a Bretonnian foot knight or some Empire warrior (I had a Bretonnian force back then but any human model was thrown in).

Can you think of any memorable experiences (good or bad) you’ve had in the hobby?
Mal - Pripyat and I got into Warhammer during the 3rd edition along with a couple of friends. One of them had chosen to play The Undead. However, because we found the rules for psychology a tad too “complex” we opted not to use them - effectively neutering his entire force! Each of his matches were horrible bloodbaths (do Skeleton Warriors bleed?)!

Prip - Spending three days painting a model to have the model tip over just after varnishing it but of course before it was dry. Luckily the mishap only damaged a small portion. Still waiting for my first mistake of varnishing a finished model with primer.

Nom - I’ve had plenty of both. Some of the best involve sitting around and pissing Prip and Mal off by killing their gang members (from long range no less). I’ve had more bad than good but I don’t really think I need to spread my complaints to yet another site…lol

Which miniatures game have you played the most?
Prip - Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

Mal - Probably a tie between WHFB and Mordheim.

Nom - I was a GW fan-boy until this year, played almost every game under the sun. Faves include Talisman, WFB, and Mordheim; I think this one had something to do with some guys with Long Bows killing people? Mal? Prip? Do you guys remember?

Mal - Very funny. I still owe you for taking out my Captain!

Which miniatures games are you interested in now?
Nom - Currently, I love Flames of War, and have become partial to Warmachine and another game called DBM/DBK. And it looks like Warhammer Historicals has caught my eye of late.

Prip - Flames of War, WFB, 40k and Mordheim.

Mal - I’m joining the rest of the crew in some Flames of War excitement, and hoping to start a Warmachine force later this year.

What projects do you have gathering dust?
Mal - I’m loathe to admit that I have several projects that I’ve neglected; not least of which are my Tau.

Nom - It’s me. All they really do is gather dust. Though at the moment I am trying to clear my platter for some new stuff… lol

Mal - Do I hear eBay calling?

Prip - Death Korps of Krieg, a Bretonnian Lord, Bretonnian Men-at-Arms, Ogre Giant, Scraplaunchers, New Beast Herd(s), Pestigors, 2 Trolls, Witch Hunter Retinue, errmmmm, hey there ain’t enough room here….
